Shark Werks GT3 stock wheel VS. HRE P40C comparison.

Our friends over at SharkWerks were contacted by a customer looking for quality lightweight wheels to install on a Porsche GT3. The decision was made that forged HRE P40C Monoblok wheels where the best choice for this build. As they worked on the GT3, they decided to compare the stock wheels on Porsche’s flagship lightweight NA 997 street car with the new forged HRE P40C wheels. This is the story of their findings.

SharkWerks got the rare Mexico Blue 997 GT3 on the rack and pulled the stock wheels off the car.

With the tires removed the factory rear wheels came in at 29.7 pounds each:

23.3 pounds for the fronts:

By comparison the lighter rear P40C wheel went on the scales and registered 22.8 pounds making it 6.9 pounds lighter.

The front P40C wheels came in at 19.7 pounds, which is 3.6 pounds per corner lighter in the front than the factory wheel. That’s unsprung weight, which will actually impact handling and overall vehicle performance:

A shot of the factory centerlocks removed:

In their place the crew installed a set of centerlocks to match the satin black finish of the HRE wheels:

In total the forged HRE wheels saved 21 pounds of unsprung weight compared to the factory wheels. Once you consider the benefit to rotational inertia, that weight savings will improve handling, braking and acceleration – and the car gets a cool cutting-edge new look.
